Stellies Stun Defending Champions in Nedbank Cup Win

Stellenbosch FC produced a monumental upset on Wednesday night, 4 February, knocking holders Kaizer Chiefs out of the Nedbank Cup with a 2-1 victory at Cape Town Stadium.

Despite entering the clash following heavy continental defeats and the tragic passing of young teammate Jeandre Gaffoor, Stellies showed immense resolve. Ibraheem Jabaar opened the scoring with a clinical 10th-minute penalty before Devin Titus doubled the advantage with a spectacular long-range effort.

Although Flavio Silva narrowed the gap from the penalty spot in the second half, the hosts held firm to secure their Round 16.

While Titus earned the official accolade, manager Gavin Hunt reserved his highest praise for debutant Wonderboy Makhubu. Hunt remarked: “I thought, for me, man of the match, Wonderboy Makuba, I thought he was outstanding.”

He further described the new signing as a “proper number nine footballer, something we really need.”

The result marks the first time since 2020 that the defending champions have exited in the opening round. For Hunt, it provided a moment of redemption against his former employers, ending the Amakhosi’s four-match winning streak on a night defined by tactical discipline and emotional grit.
